The Land Rover Freelander 2 (L359) was produced from 2006 to 2014 and uses the BCM (Body Control Module) key management system with HITAG transponder technology — the same older architecture shared with the heritage Land Rover Defender, the Discovery 3, and the early Range Rover L322. Of all the models in the JLR range, the Freelander 2 has the most accessible key security system. It uses a traditional remote blade key rather than the push-button smart key found on KVM models.

2006–2014 · BCM / HITAG · All Variants

BCM key management uses an RFID transponder chip embedded in the remote blade key head. The BCM handles the key enrolment and immobiliser matching. Although more accessible than the later KVM systems, BCM programming still requires JLR-compatible diagnostic equipment — generic cloning tools can produce a key that starts the car without correctly enrolling it to the BCM, which can later cause immobiliser faults. The eD4, TD4 and SD4 diesel variants all use the same BCM key system — only the engine outputs differ, not the security architecture.

Freelander 2 → Discovery Sport

The Freelander 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2014. The Discovery Sport moved to KVM key management — a significantly more complex system. If you are upgrading from a Freelander 2 to a Discovery Sport, the key systems are entirely different and not interchangeable.

JLR Key covers the Freelander 2 for key programming, spare keys, key replacement and all-keys-lost. DPF cleaning and ECU remapping are also available for Freelander 2 diesel models.

eD4, TD4 and SD4 — same key system: The eD4 (2WD stop-start), TD4 (4WD) and SD4 (higher-output 4WD) diesel variants all use the same BCM key management. The drivetrain and engine output do not affect the key security system. The eD4's 2WD layout has no bearing on the key process or quote.

The Process

How Freelander 2 Key Programming Works

01
Call — year and engine confirmed
Tell us your Freelander 2 year and engine. BCM applies to all L359 models — we provide a fixed price before attending with no call-out fee.
02
On-site attendance
Our specialist attends at your location across North Wales — home, workplace or roadside.
03
BCM diagnostic connection
JLR-compatible equipment connects to the Freelander 2's BCM. Unlike KVM systems, BCM programming does not require the same level of specialist IDS/SDD platforms — but proper JLR-specific tools are still required for correct enrolment.
04
Blade key cut and transponder enrolled
New key blade cut to code. Transponder chip correctly enrolled to the BCM immobiliser. Remote locking re-synchronised. Start confirmed.
05
12-month warranty
All parts and labour covered for 12 months.

No. The eD4 (2WD), TD4 (4WD) and SD4 (higher-output) diesel variants all use the same BCM key management. The engine variant and drivetrain do not affect the key security system.
Yes. The Land Rover Freelander 2 is sold as the LR2 in North America. Both refer to the same L359 vehicle with the same BCM key security system.
