ECU remapping — also referred to as engine tuning, engine chipping or simply a remap — involves reading and modifying the calibration data stored in the vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU governs virtually every aspect of how the engine operates: fuel injection timing and duration, turbocharger boost pressure, ignition advance angle, throttle response mapping, torque limiters and rev limits. Manufacturers deliberately calibrate these parameters conservatively at the factory — accounting for the widest possible range of fuel quality, operating conditions and market regulations worldwide.

A professional ECU remap replaces these conservative factory values with a custom calibration optimised specifically for the fuel quality and operating conditions in the UK, unlocking the engine's actual capability within safe margins. As the AA explains in their remapping guide, a well-executed remap on a diesel engine can increase power output by 20–30% and improve torque by a similar margin, while simultaneously improving fuel efficiency — because a more torque-rich calibration allows the driver to achieve the same road speed at lower throttle input and lower engine RPM.

JLR Key carries out ECU remapping for Jaguar and Land Rover petrol and diesel engines using OBD-port and bench-reading platforms — the same diagnostic access used for smart key programming and KVM module work. Every remap is preceded by a full diagnostic scan. If any engine fault codes are present — including DPF-related codes, boost sensor faults or injector issues — these are addressed before the remap is applied. A remap applied to a sick engine delivers no real benefit and may mask underlying faults.

The map is written and applied on-site in a single visit, with live data monitoring throughout. The original factory map is always retained and can be restored if required.

Remap Types

Which Remap Is Right for You?

Three remapping options for JLR petrol and diesel engines — each targeting a different outcome. All are applied within the engine's safe operating limits.

Performance Remap
More power · More torque · Sharper throttle response

Maximises power and torque output within safe engine limits. Turbo boost pressure, fuel mapping and ignition timing are optimised for maximum performance. Throttle response becomes more immediate. Overtaking power is significantly improved. Popular on Range Rover, Defender V8 and Discovery TDV6 / SDV6.

Increased BHP and Nm torque
Improved overtaking capability
Sharper throttle response
Retained safety margins
Economy Remap
Better MPG · Lower running costs · Smoother delivery

Optimises fuelling and torque curve for improved fuel efficiency. The engine produces more torque at lower RPM — meaning less throttle is needed for normal driving, directly reducing fuel consumption. Popular on high-mileage diesel JLR vehicles used primarily for motorway or towing work.

Improved MPG — typically 8–15%
Lower running costs over time
Smoother low-speed torque delivery
Better towing efficiency
Stage 1 Remap
Balanced gains · Most popular · No hardware changes

The most popular option — a balanced recalibration that delivers modest gains in both power and economy without any hardware modifications. Applied via OBD port with stock hardware only. Suitable for most standard JLR vehicles and the safest starting point for owners new to remapping.

Power and economy both improved
No hardware modifications needed
OBD-port application
Factory map retained and restorable
What the Remap Actually Changes
Boost Pressure
Turbo target pressure raised within safe limits — more air, more power
Fuel Injection Timing
Advanced injection timing improves combustion efficiency and power delivery
Torque Limiters
Factory torque caps loosened within drivetrain safety margins
Ignition Advance
Optimised for UK 95/98 RON petrol — more advance, more efficiency
Throttle Mapping
Response curve sharpened — more immediate pedal feel
Rev Limiter
Raised within safe mechanical limits on performance maps
DPF Regen Parameters
Regen threshold and timing optimised — helps DPF health on diesel maps
Fuel Rail Pressure
Optimised for improved atomisation and combustion quality
Lambda Targets
Air/fuel ratio targets refined for the specific engine variant
The Process

How the Remap Is Applied

On-site in a single visit. Diagnostic check first, remap applied, live data monitored throughout — original map retained.

01
Call — get a model-specific quote
Describe your JLR model, engine and your goal — performance, economy or both. A fixed price specific to your engine variant is quoted by phone. No call-out fee.
02
On-site attendance
Our specialist attends at your location across North Wales with remapping equipment and live data monitoring tools.
03
Full pre-remap diagnostic scan
The ECU is scanned for all fault codes before any remap work begins. Boost sensor readings, fuel trim values, lambda data and DPF status are all checked. Any issues are flagged — if the engine is not in good health, the remap is not applied.
04
Original map read and backed up
The current factory ECU map is read and backed up. This is retained — the original calibration can be restored at any time.
05
Custom map written and applied
The remap is applied via OBD port (or bench-read method where required). Live engine data is monitored throughout — boost pressure, EGTs, fuel pressure and lambda values are watched in real time.
06
Post-remap verification
A post-remap diagnostic scan confirms no new fault codes have been generated. Live data is reviewed to confirm the map is operating correctly across the full RPM range.
07
12-month warranty
All remapping work carries a 12-month warranty. The original factory map remains on file and can be restored on request.

Important Notes

Before Booking a Remap

Engine must be in good health
A remap applied to an engine with active fault codes, worn injectors, boost leaks or turbo issues will not deliver the expected gains and may cause harm. The pre-remap diagnostic scan identifies any issues before work begins.
Warranty implications
A remap may affect the manufacturer warranty on vehicles still under the original JLR factory warranty. Vehicles outside the warranty period are generally unaffected. Confirm your warranty status before proceeding.
Insurance — notify your insurer
A remap constitutes a vehicle modification and must be declared to your car insurer. Failure to do so can invalidate your policy. Most specialist or modified vehicle insurers treat remaps straightforwardly.
Electric models not applicable
The I-PACE and any fully electric JLR variants cannot be remapped — ECU tuning applies to internal combustion engines only. Smart key and security services are still available for EV models.

FAQ

Common Questions

Questions about ECU remapping — safety, fuel economy, warranty, emissions and what to expect.

ECU remapping modifies the calibration data in the engine's control unit — adjusting fuel injection timing, turbo boost pressure, torque limiters and ignition advance. This unlocks the engine's actual capability within safe margins. The AA's guide to ECU remapping covers the basics in detail.
Yes, when carried out correctly using JLR-specific mapping data. A full diagnostic health check is performed before any remap — if the engine has active fault codes, boost issues or mechanical problems, the remap is not applied until these are resolved. All maps are applied within the engine's safe operating limits.
For diesel engines, most remaps — including performance-focused stage 1 maps — improve fuel economy as a side effect. More torque at lower RPM means less throttle is needed for normal cruising. Economy-specific remaps are also available for owners who prioritise MPG improvement above power gains.
Yes. The original factory ECU map is always read, backed up and retained before any remap is applied. It can be restored at any time on request.
A properly applied remap should not cause an emissions failure — the map is written to keep exhaust values within legal limits. However, an aggressive or poorly written remap could potentially affect emissions readings. All maps applied by JLR Key are verified post-application.
No. There is no call-out fee on any job. A fixed price is quoted by model and engine variant before attending — no hidden charges on arrival. Call 07425 345750.
