Smart Keys, Replacement & Repairs
Questions about JLR smart key programming, all-keys-lost, spare keys, key fob repair and vehicle entry across North Wales.
Yes. JLR Key is fully equipped for all-keys-lost work on Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. Our specialist mobile technician can supply and programme new keys even when no working key exists — without unnecessary module replacement in most cases.
Many JLR all-keys-lost jobs that dealers quote KVM module replacement for can actually be resolved through specialist key programming alone, often saving owners significantly on the dealer route. A fixed price is quoted before attending — call 07425 345750 for your model-specific quote.
A spare key is programmed alongside at least one existing working key. Because the vehicle's immobiliser can 'see' a known good key during programming, spare key jobs are more straightforward and typically less expensive. See our spare JLR key page for details.
A replacement key is required when the original key is lost or no longer working. Depending on the model and security generation, this may require KVM module access or specialist all-keys-lost procedures. See JLR key replacement for full information.
Yes. Common key fob faults on Jaguar and Land Rover include worn buttons, damaged shells and dead batteries. Our key fob repair service covers shell replacement, button repair and battery service — with the fob re-synced to the vehicle on-site.
If the internal electronics are damaged or the key transponder has failed, a full replacement key may be required. We diagnose on-site and provide a fixed price before proceeding.
Most JLR smart key programming jobs are completed within 45–90 minutes on-site at your location. All-keys-lost jobs may take up to 2 hours depending on model and security generation. KVM module programming on post-2018 models with UWB keyless systems takes slightly longer due to the additional verification steps required.
A realistic time estimate is always provided when you call for a quote. Same-day attendance is available across North Wales.
We supply OEM-specification keys — programmed to your vehicle's immobiliser exactly as a dealer key would be. All keys are compatible with the full JLR smart key feature set including keyless entry, push-button start, KVM pairing and UWB proximity detection on applicable models.
Every key is programmed using JLR-specific diagnostic equipment, not generic aftermarket programmers that carry a significant failure risk on KVM systems.
Both services can be carried out in the same visit. If you are locked out of your vehicle with no working key, our JLR vehicle entry service gains access without any damage to locks, glass or bodywork — then a new key is programmed on-site.
A combined fixed price is always quoted before attending.
KVM, BCM & UWB Explained
Detailed technical answers about JLR immobiliser systems, KVM module programming, BCM architecture and UWB keyless technology.
BCM (Body Control Module) is the older JLR immobiliser architecture found on Freelander 2, Discovery 3 and older Range Rover L322/L320 models (approximately 2004–2012). BCM uses HITAG transponder technology and can typically be programmed via OBD.
KVM (Key Vehicle Module) replaced BCM from around 2012 on Discovery 4 L319, Range Rover Sport L494, Evoque L538 and others. KVM is a dedicated key management module that handles immobiliser pairing at module level. It is significantly more sensitive to incorrect programming sequences — a failed attempt can result in complete immobiliser lockout. JLR-specific tools and the correct procedure are essential.
From 2018 onwards, JLR introduced a post-2018 advanced KVM architecture across Defender L663, Range Rover L460/L461, Discovery 5 L462, Velar L560 and Evoque L551. This architecture also incorporates UWB (Ultra-Wideband) keyless technology on many variants. See our KVM module programming page for full details.
UWB (Ultra-Wideband) is a short-range wireless communication technology that enables highly precise proximity detection — accurate to within centimetres. JLR was among the first automotive manufacturers to introduce UWB-based keyless entry, beginning with the Range Rover in 2018.
UWB keyless systems use time-of-flight measurement to determine the key fob's precise distance from the vehicle, making them highly resistant to the relay attacks that affect standard Bluetooth and RF keyless entry systems. UWB is now standard on Defender L663, Range Rover L460, Discovery 5 (2021+) and Evoque L551.
Programming UWB smart keys requires JLR-specific equipment with UWB capability. Most generic auto locksmith tools cannot handle UWB key programming, and failed attempts can result in immobiliser lockout.
You can learn more about vehicle keyless security from the AA's guide to keyless car security.
JLR KVM (Key Vehicle Module) uses a proprietary programming sequence that is highly sensitive to timing, communication protocol and security token exchange. Generic auto locksmith tools — including many well-known multi-make programmers — lack full JLR protocol support and have a significant failure rate on KVM jobs.
A failed KVM programming attempt does not simply result in a key that won't work — it can trigger an immobiliser lockout that requires KVM module replacement at substantial cost. This is why many dealers falsely report that KVM module replacement is required for all-keys-lost jobs, when in the majority of cases the module is intact and only specialist key programming is needed.
JLR Key uses IDS/SDD-compatible diagnostic tools and Smart Pro/ACDP platforms with verified JLR protocols. See our KVM module programming page for a full explanation.
JLR has used four main security architectures across the 2006–2026 fleet:
BCM / HITAG (2004–2012): Freelander 2, Discovery 3, Range Rover L322. OBD-accessible, HITAG transponder.
Early KVM / HITAG2 (2010–2014): Discovery 4 L319, Range Rover Sport L320, Freelander 2 (late). Dedicated KVM module, HITAG2 or HITAG Pro.
Standard KVM (2012–2018): Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport L494, Evoque L538, XF, XE, F-PACE (pre-2018). Full KVM module-level access required.
Post-2018 Advanced KVM + UWB (2018–present): Defender L663, Range Rover L460/L461, Discovery 5 L462, Velar L560, Evoque L551, E-PACE, I-PACE. Advanced security architecture. IDS/SDD or Pathfinder-equivalent required. UWB on most variants from 2021.
In many cases, yes. Many JLR KVM faults — including all-keys-lost situations — that dealers diagnose as requiring module replacement can actually be resolved through specialist KVM programming alone, without any hardware replacement. This is a common dealer upsell.
KVM module replacement is genuinely required in cases where the module has suffered electrical failure, physical damage or a catastrophic immobiliser lockout from a failed programming attempt. In these cases, the module must be replaced and then programmed — a process also handled on-site.
A correct on-site diagnosis is provided before any work is carried out. A fixed price is quoted upfront.
DPF Cleaning, Remapping & Mileage
Questions about DPF cleaning, ECU remapping and mileage correction services for Jaguar and Land Rover across North Wales.
Yes. Professional DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) cleaning and forced regeneration is available for JLR diesel vehicles across North Wales.
A blocked DPF causes warning lights, reduced power (limp mode) and increased fuel consumption. In most cases, professional cleaning and forced regeneration restores full performance without the need for costly dealer DPF replacement. The process is carried out on-site at your location.
Signs your JLR may need DPF attention include: DPF warning light, engine management light, reduced power, increased fuel consumption or excessive white/blue exhaust smoke. Learn more about DPF maintenance from the AA's DPF guide.
Yes. ECU remapping is available for Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles across North Wales. Remapping adjusts the engine management software to optimise power, torque and fuel efficiency within safe operating parameters.
Both performance remaps (increased power and torque) and economy remaps (improved fuel efficiency) are available. Remapping is suitable for most JLR petrol and diesel engines. A full diagnostic check is carried out beforehand to confirm the engine is in good condition before any remap is applied.
Yes. Odometer calibration and mileage correction is available for Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. This service is legitimately required following instrument cluster replacement, ECU swap, dashboard repair or module failure — situations where the displayed mileage no longer matches the vehicle's true history.
All mileage correction work is fully documented. The service is carried out on-site at your location across North Wales.
Yes. Multiple services can be carried out in a single visit, subject to job complexity and timing. When booking, mention all services required so a combined appointment and fixed price can be arranged.
