The Discovery 4 uses KVM throughout its entire production run, with no mid-production security architecture change to account for.

The Discovery 4 KVM uses push-button start with keyless entry across all variants — TDV6 diesel (2009–2013), SDV6 diesel (2014–2016 facelift) and the 3.0i V6 petrol. The engine upgrade from TDV6 to SDV6 at the 2014 facelift did not affect the key security architecture. KVM requires specialist JLR-compatible diagnostic tools — generic equipment cannot programme Discovery 4 keys correctly. A failed programming attempt risks KVM lockout, requiring specialist recovery before any key work can proceed.

Discovery 4 vs Discovery 3

The Discovery 3 (2004–2009) uses the older BCM key management system — not KVM. If your vehicle was registered before 2009 it is likely a Discovery 3 (also covered).
