Three Generations — Three Systems
The Range Rover Sport has been produced across three distinct body generations since its 2005 launch, each using a completely different key security architecture. Like the full-size Range Rover, the Sport's key system is determined by the body generation — not the engine or trim level. The first question when calling about a Range Rover Sport key is always: which generation?
The original Range Rover Sport (L320) uses BCM (Body Control Module) key management with HITAG transponder technology — the same architecture as the contemporary L322 Range Rover. Remote blade key with a separate RF fob, or a later-model folding remote key. BCM programming is more straightforward than the later KVM systems but still requires JLR-compatible diagnostic equipment. All L320 key types and engine variants are covered.
The L494 moved to KVM (Key Vehicle Module) key management — the same architecture as the L405 Range Rover. Push-button start smart key with keyless entry across all variants. The SVR performance variant uses the same KVM as all other L494 models. The P400e PHEV also uses standard KVM. JLR-specific diagnostic tools are required for all key operations on the L494.
The third-generation L461 Sport mirrors the L460 Range Rover's security architecture — advanced KVM with UWB (Ultra-Wideband) keyless proximity throughout. All L461 variants, including the P510e PHEV and SVR, use advanced KVM + UWB from launch. This is the most demanding Range Rover Sport generation for key programming and requires the latest IDS/SDD-compatible specialist equipment.
Range Rover Sport Models & Engines
All Range Rover Sport engine and trim variants across three generations. The trim level does not affect the key system — it is the body generation that determines the architecture.
SVR variants: The L494 SVR (575ps supercharged V8) uses the same standard KVM as all other L494 Sport models. The L461 SVR uses advanced KVM + UWB. Both are fully covered. The SVR performance hardware — engine, suspension, brakes — does not affect the key security system in either generation.
