The Range Rover is Land Rover's flagship model and the vehicle with the widest key security history in the entire JLR range — spanning three entirely different security architectures across four decades of continuous production. Knowing which generation your Range Rover is from is the first step to understanding what equipment and process is required for key programming.

L322 · 2002–2012 · BCM

The L322 uses BCM (Body Control Module) key management with HITAG transponder technology — the older Land Rover security architecture. Key types vary by year: early L322 models use a conventional remote blade key; later facelift models use a proximity card-style key. BCM programming is more accessible than KVM but still requires JLR-compatible diagnostic tools for correct enrolment. All L322 key types covered — remote key, blade key and card key.

L405 · 2013–2021 · KVM Standard

The L405 introduced KVM (Key Vehicle Module) key management to the Range Rover — the same architecture introduced on the XJ X351 and later XF facelift. Push-button start smart key with keyless entry. The KVM requires specialist JLR diagnostic tools — generic equipment cannot programme L405 keys. Covers all L405 variants including TDV6, SDV6, SDV8, V8 SC, P400e PHEV and all trim levels from Vogue to SVAutobiography.

L460 · 2022–Present · Advanced KVM + UWB

The fifth-generation L460 uses the most advanced key architecture in the JLR range — advanced KVM with UWB (Ultra-Wideband) proximity detection throughout. UWB uses time-of-flight radio measurement for precision keyless entry, replacing the older RF proximity system. The L460 is the most technically demanding Range Rover for key programming and requires the latest specialist equipment. All L460 variants covered — P360, P400, P530, PHEV, SV and SV Bespoke.

Range Rover Models & Engines

All Range Rover variants across all three generations. The trim level and engine do not affect the key security system within each generation — it is the body generation (L322 / L405 / L460) that determines the architecture.

The Process

How Range Rover Key Programming Works

01
Call — generation confirmed
Tell us your Range Rover year or registration. We identify the generation (L322, L405 or L460), confirm the correct equipment and provide a fixed price before attending.
02
On-site attendance
Our specialist attends at your location across North Wales — home, workplace or roadside. No garage or recovery truck needed.
03
Security system connection
L322: BCM OBD access with HITAG key enrolment. L405: KVM module connection via JLR-specific diagnostic platform. L460: Advanced KVM + UWB pairing via latest specialist equipment.
04
Key enrolled and verified
New OEM key fully programmed. For L460, UWB proximity confirmed. Keyless entry and push-button start tested before job sign-off.
05
12-month warranty
All parts and labour covered for 12 months.
FAQ

Range Rover Key Questions

Common questions about Range Rover key replacement — identifying your generation, Autobiography, PHEV and all-keys-lost.

The easiest way: if your Range Rover was registered 2002–2012 it is an L322 (BCM). If 2013–2021, it is an L405 (KVM). If 2022 or later, it is an L460 (advanced KVM + UWB). Tell us your year when you call and we will confirm immediately.
Yes. The L322 uses BCM key management — generally more accessible than the later KVM systems. Both the remote blade key (early L322) and the proximity card-style key (late L322 facelift) are fully covered for programming, replacement and all-keys-lost.
No. All Range Rover trim levels — Vogue, Vogue SE, Autobiography, Westminster, SVAutobiography, SV and SV Bespoke — use the same key security system as all other variants within the same generation. The trim level does not affect the key architecture.
No. The P400e PHEV (L405) and P460e PHEV (L460) use the same key architecture as petrol and diesel variants within the same generation. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain does not affect key programming.
Yes. All-keys-lost recovery is available for all three Range Rover generations on-site across North Wales. L460 advanced KVM + UWB all-keys-lost may take up to 2 hours. A realistic estimate is given when you call.
No. There is no call-out fee. A fixed price is quoted before attending — no hidden charges on arrival. Call 07425 345750.
