Jaguar XJ Key Security
The Jaguar XJ X351 is Jaguar's flagship full-size luxury saloon, produced from 2010 to 2019 on an all-aluminium monocoque body. Unlike the XF which spans multiple security generations, the X351 XJ uses KVM (Key Vehicle Module) key management consistently across its entire production run — from the 2010 launch through to the final 2019 models. There is no mid-production security architecture change to account for. Confirming the model year is still useful for understanding trim and engine, but the KVM system is the same regardless.
The XJ was Jaguar's first model to introduce the KVM module — predating its appearance in the XF facelift and the original F-PACE. It was also Jaguar's first push-button start smart key saloon at launch. The KVM requires specialist JLR diagnostic access for all key operations — the same IDS/SDD-compatible tools and ACDP platforms used for all Jaguar smart key programming. Generic tools cannot enrol keys to the XJ KVM correctly, and a failed attempt can trigger immobiliser lockout.
The XJ is available in standard wheelbase and long wheelbase (XJL) variants — both use the same key system. The XJR and XJR 575 performance models use the same KVM architecture as all other X351 variants. The XJ Sentinel armoured variant is also covered — the armoured bodywork does not affect key programming access.
