ECU remapping — also referred to as engine tuning, engine chipping or simply a remap — involves reading and modifying the calibration data stored in the vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU governs virtually every aspect of how the engine operates: fuel injection timing and duration, turbocharger boost pressure, ignition advance angle, throttle response mapping, torque limiters and rev limits. Manufacturers deliberately calibrate these parameters conservatively at the factory — accounting for the widest possible range of fuel quality, operating conditions and market regulations worldwide.
