A JLR key fob repair covers any situation where the key fob is physically damaged or no longer functioning correctly — but the underlying transponder and key pairing to the vehicle may still be intact. Rather than immediately quoting a full key replacement, JLR Key diagnoses the specific fault on-site and carries out only the work needed to restore the fob to full function.

Jaguar and Land Rover smart key fobs are precision components containing a transponder chip, circuit board, battery, RF antenna and in newer models a UWB (Ultra-Wideband) proximity module. The outer shell and buttons are separate from the internal electronics — which means many common fob faults can be resolved with shell or button replacement and re-sync, without touching the transponder or programming a new key.

The re-sync process after shell replacement uses JLR-specific diagnostic equipment to re-pair the fob with the vehicle's KVM (Key Vehicle Module) or BCM (Body Control Module) — confirming keyless entry, push-button start and proximity detection are all working before leaving. Learn more about car key fob issues from the AA's key advice guide.

If the internal circuit board or transponder has failed beyond repair, a full key replacement is the next step — diagnosed and quoted on the same visit with no additional call-out charge.

Fault Types

What Can Be Repaired?

Six common JLR key fob faults — colour-coded by outcome. The fault is diagnosed on-site before any charge is made.

Repairable on-site
Assessed on-site
Replacement needed
Worn or Broken Buttons
Repairable

The most common fob fault. JLR key fob buttons wear out over time — the rubber membrane compresses and stops making contact. Shell and button replacement restores full tactile response. The internal transponder is unaffected.

Cracked or Damaged Shell
Repairable

A dropped or sat-on fob shell cracks but typically leaves the internal electronics intact. An OEM-specification replacement shell is fitted and the internal board transferred across — the fob is re-synced and fully functional.

Flat or Failing Battery
Repairable

A flat key fob battery prevents remote locking, keyless entry and push-button start from working. Battery replacement is straightforward — the new battery is fitted and the fob re-synced to the vehicle's immobiliser to restore full function.

Fob Lost Pairing / Not Recognised
Repairable

A fob that is physically intact but no longer recognised by the vehicle has lost its immobiliser pairing. Using JLR-specific diagnostic equipment, the fob is re-enrolled into the KVM or BCM — restoring keyless entry and push-button start without replacing any hardware.

Water Damage
Assess on-site

Water ingress can damage the circuit board, corrode contacts or short the RF antenna. The extent is assessed on-site. Minor corrosion can sometimes be cleaned and the board restored. Severe water damage may require a full key replacement.

Transponder / Circuit Board Failure
Replacement needed

If the internal transponder chip or circuit board has failed electrically, repair is not possible. A full key replacement is the correct solution. This is diagnosed on-site — a fixed price for replacement is quoted immediately, with no additional call-out charge.

FAQ

Common Questions

Questions about JLR key fob repair, fault types, re-sync and whether you need a full replacement.

Yes. All fob repair work — shell replacement, button repair, battery service and re-sync — is carried out on-site at your location across North Wales. No garage visit required.
The most common faults are worn or broken buttons, cracked shells, flat batteries, and fobs that have lost pairing with the vehicle. Less commonly, water damage or internal circuit board failure can prevent the fob from communicating with the vehicle.
If the internal transponder or circuit board has failed beyond repair, a full key replacement is needed. This is diagnosed on-site and quoted immediately — no additional call-out is needed. A replacement key can sometimes be programmed in the same visit.
Yes. A fob that has lost pairing with the vehicle can be re-enrolled using JLR-specific diagnostic equipment — re-pairing with the KVM, BCM or UWB system depending on the model. All generations from 2006 to 2026 are covered.
Not necessarily. Button and shell replacement is one of the most common and cost-effective repairs. An OEM-spec shell is fitted and the internal board transferred across, then the fob is re-synced. A full key replacement is only needed if the internal transponder or circuit board has failed.
No. There is no call-out fee on any job. A fixed price is quoted by phone before attending — no hidden charges on arrival. Call 07425 345750.
